LocoFood Farm Visit: A Delightful and Informative Experience for Kids of All Ages

Last Saturday, a group of children from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, inspired by UAEWildschoolers, a collective of nature educators, embarked on a captivating journey to LocoFood Farm. LocoFood Farm is an exceptional local organic farm that offers a range of educational and enjoyable activities for kids of all ages. This immersive experience proved to be both delightful and informative, leaving the children with valuable insights into the origins of their food.
The visit commenced with an enlightening talk by LocoFood's partner, Jason Moore, who shared intriguing anecdotes about the historical significance of dates. One such story revolved around Sheikh Zayed, known for his act of cutting the trunk of date palms along roadsides to make them shorter, allowing everyone to easily access and pluck these succulent fruits. To provide further expertise on local vegetation, origin, and crafts, the children were also accompanied by Mike Metzger, a renowned expert in the field.
The children were enthralled as they calmly walked among free-range chickens and turkeys, their faces lighting up as they got the chance to hold heart-filled chicks in their hands. The farm visit also included the opportunity to interact with lambs, goats, and sheep, where the children learned about their unique characteristics and actively participated in feeding them with specially prepared food.
During a comprehensive tour of the farm, the children witnessed an array of crops flourishing before them. Instead of the winter season sights of cherry tomatoes, pumpkin, and habanero peppers, they were treated to the sight of bountiful basil, delectable dates, vibrant carrots, tamarind and green lime trees, and other locally sourced produce. The children relished the experience of handpicking their own vegetables and even joined in the harvest of the crops.
Jason Moore, in addition to his insightful stories, passed around Lanjarón natural mineral water to the children. This water, containing 100 years of earth's trace minerals, provided a refreshing and nourishing drink for the young explorers, further enhancing their farm visit experience.
The visit concluded with a wholesome dinner in the farm's serene orchard of local sidr trees. The children savored the freshness of the dates and vegetables they had personally plucked, igniting conversations about the tradition and use of local date palms.
